The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Cody Rhodes continues to face questions about his departure from AEW nearly three years after leaving the promotion. This topic often stirs curiosity among fans and pundits alike.
During a recent interview with Inside the Ropes, The American Nightmare addressed these speculations, particularly the reasons behind his and his wife Brandi’s exit, which he insists are far less intriguing than some might believe. During the discussion, Rhodes shed some light on the nature of his negotiations with AEW at the time. He clarified that AEW’s offers extended to both him and Brandi with their reality series, ‘Rhodes to the Top,’ also being renewed for another season.
“Brandi and I had been offered new contracts,” Rhodes said. “Brandi had a great deal with Tony, and I had a great deal with Tony. ‘Rhodes to the Top’ season two had been renewed.”
Despite the speculation around his departure, Cody Rhodes expressed a temptation to share his side of the story but also acknowledged the risks that come with being in the public eye. He voiced concern about the potential for misinformation to take root, particularly as it pertains to his legacy and that of his family.
“I think that’s a little scary when you’re in the public eye, no matter what public eye that might be. And I think the idea that, as we grow older and share more and books are written and interviews like this, and larger interviews…I have a daughter and her legacy is my legacy and my dad and my family, my brother still being with the company. I just don’t want my legacy to be, in any way…I don’t want elements that are fabricated or lied about becoming [the] truth. And that’s where the temptation is to speak up and say ‘No no no, here’s what happened.’ But even so, when it takes root, sometimes [people] really need that to be the story. They just do, and they’re not going to believe you regardless.”
Cody Rhodes is coming off a successful title defence at WWE Bash in Berlin recently, putting down his close ally, Kevin Owens. While he openly expressed about his AEW exit, his tenure with the company will surely be remembered as one of the crucial journeys that has led him to the top of the WWE mountain today.
