During WWE WrestleMania 40 Sunday, Cody Rhodes achieved a major milestone by defeating Roman Reigns to become the Undisputed WWE Champion. The road to this result was a long and arduous one and Cody Rhodes has now claimed that fans would have been genuinely angry about his original plans for WrestleMania 40.
Cody Rhodes earned his shot at the WWE title by winning the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble, but in a surprising move, he seemingly gave up his WrestleMania match to The Rock in February on WWE SmackDown. The road to WrestleMania was filled with unexpected twists, particularly when The Rock aligned with Roman Reigns, positioning himself as “The Final Boss” in the storyline.
As WrestleMania 40 approached, many fans were left wondering what this meant for Cody, especially with the anticipated clash between Roman Reigns and The Rock. Addressing the situation, Cody shared in an interview with Kenny McIntosh of Inside The Ropes that if fans knew the original plan for him, they might have been even more frustrated. Although he couldn’t reveal the specifics of “The Rock plan,” Cody hinted that he had a strong team supporting him and credited DDP’s advice, which emphasized that whatever happens would ultimately be the best outcome.
Cody reflected on the situation, mentioning that despite the uncertainty, he realized he had every reason to remain confident and not worry. He also humorously noted that the days following the decision were spent with the support of a Wheatley Vodka sponsorship, implying that he found a way to cope with the unexpected turn of events.
“If people knew the real plan for me, they’d be even more angry. I can’t share the real plan for you, The Rock plan, whatever it may be. That was going to be on my mind in terms of how do we make that work? How do we accomplish that? I had a really good team of people around me.
That’s where DDP hit me with the famous, whatever happens to you will be the best thing that ever happens to you line, and I thought, that’s insane, that’s madness. I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, and he was right. Including if it had gone the other way, he would have been right because the audience was what mattered, and I got to be really quiet and I got to say nothing, I got to watch the fire grow and I realised maybe I had every right to be confident. Maybe I had every right to not be concerned. But yeah, definitely, let’s say it was a Wheatley Vodka-sponsored few days.”
Cody Rhodes also revealed his legitimate thoughts while forfeiting his WrestleMania 40 spot to The Rock. Regardless, The American Nightmare is going strong as the Undisputed WWE Champion and that’s all that matters to him.
