WWE’s NXT brand brought No Mercy to Denver’s Bell Center on September 1, featuring a highly anticipated grudge match between two former tag team champions.
The animosity between Wes Lee and Zachary Wentz began at NXT: The Great American Bash Night 2, where Lee turned heel for the first time in his career by attacking his Rascalz teammates, Trey Miguel and Wentz, after he and Wentz failed to capture the NXT Tag Team Championship. The following week, Lee justified his actions by accusing Wentz of abandoning him to join TNA. This led Lee to challenge Wentz to a match at No Mercy. Although Lee later competed in a triple threat match to determine the #1 contender for the NXT Championship, which Joe Hendry won, the real drama unfolded when Wentz attacked Lee post-match, setting the stage for their showdown at No Mercy.
Wentz, who had recently won the X-Division Title at Emergence, brought his championship to the ring, though this match was purely about pride, not titles. The battle allowed Wentz to reclaim his identity after his time as Nash Carter, while Lee had his own points to prove.
From the opening bell, both competitors were relentless, taking the fight outside the ring before returning to the squared circle for an evenly matched contest. Wentz gained some momentum after landing a powerful kick to Lee’s head, but the back-and-forth action continued with both men exchanging near falls. Wentz locked in a Boston Crab, but Lee managed to escape and counter with a Cardiac Kick, resulting in a close two count. Commentary humorously noted, “Nash got hit so hard he may think his name is Carter when he wakes up.”
The intensity escalated when Lee placed Wentz on the commentary table, which broke under the impact, yet Lee still executed a double knee drop from the top rope to the floor, underscoring the personal nature of their feud.
The match took a turn when Trey Miguel appeared at ringside, distracting Lee just long enough for Wentz to land a devastating destroyer from the apron to the floor. Wentz followed up with a UFO to secure the victory, marking a significant moment as his hand was raised in triumph in Denver.
