WWE expanded to the UK market with the introduction of NXT UK back in June 2018. This project led to the development of top talent such as Tyler Bate, Pete Dunne, GUNTHER and many more. NXT UK talent assumed that WWE was going to shut down the brand for good, which is what happened in the end. With that said, it appears NXT Europe may never become a reality.
WWE announced NXT Europe, as NXT UK is a thing of the past. NXT Europe will “reimagine the brand and talent pipeline” with a renewed focus on Europe. They released a lot of talent due to this move.
It was also reported that WWE has huge plans for NXT Europe. William Regal previously revealed that NXT Europe was in the process for many years, but it was then noted that NXT Europe was no longer a priority for WWE.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that people had been telling him two years ago that NXT Europe might never actually happen. Recently, he’s heard even less about the brand possibly launching in 2024.
Meltzer reflected on how, after NXT UK was closed, there were plans to quickly start NXT Europe, but instead, most of the NXT UK roster was let go. He questioned why WWE would fire so many people if they truly planned to launch NXT Europe, especially since the contracts were relatively low-cost, under $25,000 a year.
Some had suggested that the talk of NXT Europe was just a way to avoid admitting the failure of NXT UK, which was originally created to counter the ITV show in the UK. Now, two years later, Meltzer notes that there’s even less talk about NXT Europe than there was back then.
“I just keep thinking like remember when they closed NXT UK? This was a couple of years ago now and they were going to immediately re-open NXT Europe and then they fired almost everyone…Most of the people that worked NXT UK were fired and I thought if you’re going to do NXT Europe like you say why are you firing people? They were under $25,000 a year contracts, it’s not like they were paying giant money to these people. The cost savings were negligible. Other people were telling me they’re never gonna do this Europe thing, they say it because they didn’t want to admit to shutting down the UK thing because the UK thing was their original idea to offset that ITV show…I always hear we’re doing the European thing but it’s been years now and I’m hearing less now than I heard years ago that they are.”
Triple H also previously stated that there has been lot of progress on NXT Europe but that seems to be a thing of the past now. Regardless, WWE has many other plans in the pipeline and fans just have to accept the fact that NXT Europe may never see the light of day.
