Rey Mysterio is a revered legend in the professional wrestling world and he has accomplished just about everything a pro wrestler would want in their career. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame last year and has now revealed that WWE approached him for the induction.
After a career spanning over three decades, the Legendary Luchador was honored during WrestleMania 39 weekend for his contributions, notably for reviving the Latino World Order.
While speaking to Notsam Wrestling, Rey Mysterio was asked if he had any hesitation about being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Rey Mysterio revealed that WWE approached him about being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The conversation began when Triple H mentioned the possibility of the induction, which he brought up in late 2022, just before the start of 2023.
Initially, Mysterio was concerned that the offer implied a push toward retirement. However, Triple H clarified that the induction was planned for LA, close to Mysterio’s home in San Diego, to allow his closest friends, family, and fans to attend the event. Mysterio felt honored by the gesture but was initially apprehensive about the implications for his career. Ultimately, he understood that the intention was not to retire him but to celebrate his career in a location meaningful to him.
“As soon as that question was brought up—and it was brought up by Triple H—he said, ‘Rey, you know, we wanted to see if we wanted to induct you into the Hall of Fame this year.’ I think he mentioned it right before 2023, so it was late 2022. The first thing that came out of my mouth was, ‘Whoa, wait a minute, Hunter. I’m not ready to retire.’ He responded, ‘No, no, no. We don’t want you to retire. We just feel that because it’s in LA, which is very close to your home in San Diego, it would be the best spot for your closest friends, family, and fans to attend a special event.’ I was like, ‘Okay, now I’m seeing things differently.’ I felt honored immediately but was scared that they wanted me to retire. But no, it wasn’t that—it was the complete opposite.”
The Master of The 619 also shared his reasons for continuing to wear masks around children. Nonetheless, Mysterio plans to remain an active in-ring performer for as long as his body permits, which he believes is what truly matters to him as a WWE Hall of Famer.
