On the August 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, former AEW World ChampionSwerve Strickland addressed his AEW All-In loss in a tense segment with Hangman Page, who tried to cause interference in the bout.
After Page’s victory over Ishii, Strickland confronted him in the ring, criticizing Page for acting like a child and not living up to his potential. He acknowledged his own failure at All In but asserted that, despite not holding a title, he will always be seen as a World Champion. The confrontation culminated in the announcement of a steel cage match between the two at AEW All Out on September 7, adding another exciting bout to the upcoming pay-per-view.
A recent report by Fightful Select stated Swerve Strickland revealed earlier this year that there were initial plans for additional matches in his feud with Hangman Page, including a steel cage match slated for late 2023. However, after their intense blowoff match, it was decided to save the steel cage match for a later time, as it would be more impactful following the Texas Death Match.
Swerve also mentioned that during their feud, Hangman Page’s wife was pregnant with their second child, which led to Page taking time off for paternity leave earlier this year. This leave had been planned well in advance as part of his contract with AEW, and the company was aware of how long he would be out of action.
“During our interview with Swerve Strickland earlier this year, Swerve confirmed to Fightful that there were originally going to be more matches in their initial run. One of those was supposed to be a steel cage match, late in 2023. However, after their highly touted blowoff match, it was decided that match was better to be used at a later time, and that a cage match following the Texas Death Match. Swerve also effectively revealed that Hangman Page’s wife was pregnant with their second child during the feud. Earlier this year, when Fightful had reported Hangman was slated for time off due to personal, non-injury reasons, it was because Hangman had worked in extensive paternity leave into his deal. The company always knew how long he’d be out of action.”
With the match now made official after saving it for a long time at AEW All Out, tensions will certainly be off the roof as Strickland and Page will collide inside a Steel Cage with all rules thrown out of the window.
