In the past five years, AEW has become a strong competitor to WWE. Interestingly, WWE has scheduled a special live event on the same day and in the same city as AEW Worlds End. Some believe that WWE’s move is an attempt to obliterate AEW.

On August 16, 2024, WWE SmackDown was held at the Kia Center in Orlando, FL. During the show, WWE unveiled their plans to return to the venue for a “Holiday Tour” live event on Saturday, December 28th.

At the same time, AEW’s World’s End 2024 pay-per-view is scheduled to take place in Orlando at the Addition Financial Arena on the same date. Tickets for World’s End, initially announced for Orlando on April 11th, have yet to be released.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Jim Cornette talked about WWE’s decision to pit a live show against AEW Worlds End. Cornette explains that historically, wrestling promoters avoided running shows on the same night as WWE events due to the risk of negatively impacting their own shows. Vince McMahon was known to sometimes accept financial losses to compete against local promotions, but usually avoided direct conflicts unless there was a significant ongoing promotional battle.

Cornette believes that WWE now aims to “obliterate” AEW, viewing the move as a strategic effort to dominate the market and diminish AEW’s presence. He adds that WWE’s approach reflects a more aggressive stance, aiming to decisively defeat AEW.

“Well, the conventional wisdom for a while, for a lot of companies, was don’t run the same night as, you know, another show—a WWE show—because it’ll, you know, it’ll kill your [expletive] show, right? When there were territories, Vince was willing to lose money sometimes just to go in and run against the local office, but unless it was an ongoing promotional war, most of the time you didn’t want to run opposition. But now they realize, ‘We can just obliterate these [expletive], we can just obliterate them.’ And at this point, you know, they’re asking for it. Their Old Yeller is about to wander out behind the barn, so I’m not surprised, and they will obliterate AEW.”

AEW’s internal reaction to them pitting a live event against Worlds End has also been revealed. Regardless, we will have to wait and see if AEW has a fighting chance against the WWE live event at the end of this year.
