AEW All In 2024 saw several titles change hands, including the FTW Championship, which saw HOOK reclaim the title from Chris Jericho in a brutal, weapon-filled match. Despite the intense competition and the spotlight on the FTW Title, a certain negative remark was made about the title during the post-event press conference.
During the press conference, a journalist made a remark where he called the FTW title a joke. AEW President Tony Khan clarified that the FTW Title is not meant to be seen as a joke or an afterthought in AEW. He emphasized that the title has been treated with respect and significance, particularly by the competitors who have held it. Khan highlighted that the title’s purpose is to represent a rebellious spirit and is an integral part of AEW’s storytelling, even if the promotion doesn’t officially recognize it.
The journalist acknowledged his mistake of using the word “joke” to ask his question about the FTW title and issued an apology to the man who introduced the title back in 1998 in ECW, Taz.
“I’m the reporter that asked the question about the FTW Championship and I would hate to see it get retired, @OfficialTAZ . I regret the word joke, I was trying to reference its origins as an unofficial belt in ECW & later AEW. In truth, I was trying to say how far it has come. 🧡”
Taz took notice and responded via his X, accepting his apology while making it clear that joke was the wrong word to address the title and outlining the importance and legacy of the FTW Championship over the years.
“People make mistakes, you said you miss spoke. Maybe you were nervous, shit happens no big deal & @TonyKhan broke it down perfectly in the scrum. “Joke” was a really inaccurate way to describe the FTW title in ECW & AEW. I’m sure u would agree, none of the FTW champions were or are jokes I can guarantee you that. Thanks for the support tho, I do appreciate that. 👍.”
After being retired following ECW’s closure, the title was revived in AEW in 2020, maintaining its non-sanctioned status from its previous days. With HOOK now reigning as the FTW Champion once again, AEW plans to continue giving the title the respect it deserves, ensuring it remains a symbol of defiance and excellence in professional wrestling.
