WWE has a strong Intercontinental Champion in Bron Breakker, who is continuing to showcase his immense potential. After securing a significant victory over Sami Zayn for the championship at SummerSlam 2024, Breakker has proven himself as a formidable force in the company. As a second-generation WWE Superstar, this victory marked a major milestone in his career, but with the title firmly in his grasp, he now needs a new challenger to step up.
On the August 26 episode of WWE RAW, the company began the process of determining Breakker’s next opponent. They announced during the August 19 episode of WWE RAW that the tournament would be kicking off this week.
This week’s show featured tournament matches, with the second being The Miz facing off against Xavier Woods and Pete Dunne, while Kofi Kingston. Jey Uso had already punched his ticket to be one of the four people in the fatal 4-way match to determine who will face Bron Breakker next.
Pete Dunne was relentless, fully embracing his Bruiserweight persona in a hard-hitting showdown. The Miz was also at the top of his game, eager to add another Intercontinental Title to his impressive resume. Meanwhile, Xavier Woods was determined to secure a win for The New Day, especially after Kofi Kingston’s earlier setback.
After battling through a commercial break, Woods delivered a gut buster to The Miz and followed up by powerbombing Dunne onto Miz, but it wasn’t enough to score a pinfall on either opponent. The match then devolved into a series of brutal chops as the competitors traded blows.
The Miz attempted a double Skull Crushing Finale, but both Woods and Dunne managed to escape, leaving the crowd wondering what could have been. Woods then rolled up The Miz for a near fall, but Miz kicked out and quickly hit a Skull Crushing Finale. However, Dunne threw Miz off, trying to steal the pin, but it didn’t work. As the chaos continued, The Miz found himself trapped in a submission hold by Dunne, but managed to reach over and nearly pin Woods, who got his shoulder up just in time. Dunne maintained his hold on Miz until Woods broke it up with a well-timed kick to both competitors’ heads.
Woods then climbed to the top rope and delivered his signature elbow drop on Miz, but Dunne pulled the referee out of the ring before the three-count. Seizing the moment, Dunne hit The Miz with the Bitter End and secured his spot in the Intercontinental Title #1 Contender tournament. Now, Pete Dunne will join Jey Uso in the upcoming 4-way match.
