Cody Rhodes has proven himself to be a relentless and determined champion since claiming the title of Undisputed WWE Champion. He hasn’t shied away from any challenger, including Grayson Waller. Their paths collided during the August 23 episode of WWE SmackDown. In the process, Chris Jericho had a little cameo during the show.

The American Nightmare, fed up with Waller’s incessant arrogance, issued a direct challenge for him to face off on SmackDown this week. The show opened with the Grayson Waller Effect, wasting no time in setting the stage for their confrontation.

Waller was intent on bursting Cody’s bubble, going as far as to warn him against trusting Kevin Owens, backing his claims with a highlight reel of Owens betraying his friends over the years—including the infamous turn on Chris Jericho during the Festival of Friendship.

Interestingly, WWE not only featured Jericho in the package but also displayed his name prominently, a notable shift from their usual treatment of former talent who have moved on to rival promotions.

Kevin Owens then emerged to address the situation, justifying most of his past betrayals, with the exception of Kofi Kingston, a moment he admitted he still regrets. Nick Aldis followed, announcing a tag team match for later in the evening, pitting A-Town Down Under against Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes.

We will have to see if Chris Jericho ever makes a return to WWE. He seems happy in AEW right now. At least we know that Triple H hasn’t barred him from previously aired clips.
