Penta El Zero Miedo, renowned for his role in the acclaimed Lucha Brothers tag team with Rey Fenix, has been a prominent figure in AEW since its launch in 2019. As their contracts approach expiration and speculation about a potential move to WWE grows, reports have surfaced suggesting they might not want to join NXT. However, Konnan has now dismissed these reports.
As previously reported, Penta El Zero Miedo’s AEW contract is set to expire between August and September 2024, making him potential free agent. He is reportedly open to exploring opportunities outside AEW, with WWE showing interest in securing his services.
The same situation applies to Rey Fenix, as both wrestlers’ contracts are set to end this year. There is a strong belief within AEW that Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix might be heading to WWE once their contracts expire.
Earlier this month, Fightful Select reported that there had been significant speculation about Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo’s status with AEW. Sources indicated that while AEW had shown interest in re-signing the duo, the process has been delayed by Penta and Fenix. Recent signs, including a cryptic tweet from Konnan, have suggested that the duo might not be looking to renew with AEW.
Internally, WWE discussed the possibility of bringing them in, with indications that they wanted to bypass NXT and move directly to the main roster. Some sources even suggest that the Lucha Brothers might be preparing for this transition soon.
While speaking on Keepin’ It 100, Konnan was asked about Fightful’s report about The Lucha Brothers wanting to skip NXT and whether it was a bad sign for things to come for NXT.
“The Lucha Brothers want to skip NXT. Is this a bad sign? Hi guys, you’re all well aware that the Lucha Brothers are likely headed to WWE. There’s a report from Cody, who probably knows more than anyone, but I imagine he’s keeping things vague for now, and rightfully so. I do have a question regarding the report, though. It has come out that the two are demanding to skip NXT. I can appreciate that they want main roster money and exposure. Is this a bad sign of things to come?”
Konnan then took it upon himself to shut down the report and stated that it was not true and absolutely incorrect, making it clear that The Lucha Brothers don’t want to bypass NXT.
“Who’s Fightful? Sean Ross Sapp? You are absolutely incorrect, my friend,”
In the meantime, Rey Fenix has also pulled out of an indie even in September. Possible names for the Lucha Brothers after their AEW departure have also been revealed. Nevertheless, we’ll have to see if they will end up leaving AEW and joining WWE, as all signs point towards that happening.
