John Cena is retiring from in-ring competition in 2025, and that has brought up the topic of farewell matches for a few seasoned veterans. Chris Jericho congratulated Cena for the retirement, although he won’t speak of his own. Rey Mysterio is different, as he has now stated that he wants to give his fans something good on the way out.
Rey Mysterio, who is set to turn 50 this December, continues to perform at a high level, though his career is closer to its end than its beginning. Already a WWE Hall of Famer with a storied career, Mysterio has a laundry list of accomplishments and hopes to give fans a proper farewell when the time is right.
Mysterio also signed a new multi-year contract last year. While at the Fanatics NYC Fest, Rey Mysterio spoke to Busted Open Radio. He expressed his plan for retirement, but he didn’t go into how far down the road that will be. As current leader of the LWO, Mysterio isn’t leaving WWE just yet.
“I think what’s left is to be able to plan a nice sunset and be able to thank everyone that has followed and supported me throughout the years, and give them, when the time is right, a good farewell. Not something that’ll happen one time and then I come back and do it again. Maybe a farewell tour. Something that can mean something to me and everyone that will be there. Whether it’s every city, a country, ‘this is the last time we’ll be together.”
Mysterio, who has revolutionized the high-flying style of lucha libre and become one of the most influential wrestlers of all time, hasn’t wrestled on television since the July 8th episode of WWE Raw, where he was defeated by Dominik Mysterio in a tag team match. His last match was a dark match on August 2, 2024, where he teamed with Jey Uso and Awesome Truth to defeat The Judgment Day in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rey Mysterio began his career in Mexico before making a name for himself in ECW and WCW, where his innovative and acrobatic maneuvers captivated audiences. He joined WWE in 2002, where he became a multi-time World Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and Tag Team Champion. In 2020, Mysterio decided to stick around WWE in order to help Dominik Mysrerio find his footing in the company, a choice that has certainly paid off for everyone involved. If it weren’t for Dirty Dom breaking into the pro wrestling business, Mysterio may have decided to try AEW out.
Rey Mysterio is celebrated for his underdog persona, his iconic 619 finishing move, and his mask, which has become a symbol of his heritage and wrestling legacy. We will have to see what’s next for him, but it appears that he is considering the final chapters of his WWE career and how they will be written.
