Rey Fenix, alongside his Lucha Brothers cohort, Penta El Zero Miedo, have been cornerstones of AEW since its inception in 2019. However, as their contracts approach expiration, a new development has come to light amidst WWE bound rumors.
Both Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix’s AEW contracts are rumored to expire between August and September 2024, positioning them as potential free agents. Reports suggest that both wrestlers are open to exploring opportunities outside of AEW, and WWE has shown interest in bringing them on board.
The speculation has been fueled further by Rey Fenix pulling out of an indie event scheduled for September 27 in El Paso, Texas. This withdrawal has heightened rumors of a WWE move, with internal discussions within WWE reportedly focused on acquiring the Lucha Brothers once their AEW contracts expire.
However, according to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there is concern that AEW might exercise its right to extend Rey Fenix’s contract by another year due to time off from injuries. Furthermore, there were rumors that he was going to NXT or possibly getting a physical examination in Pittsburgh to join the company, despite stating earlier that AEW was his current home. However, as mentioned, Fenix would not have signed WWE deal until his current contract with AEW expires.
“Obviously Penta & Fenix are not being featured. There is concern now because AEW has the right to extend Fenix’s deal for another year due to time off due to injuries. Because of all the talk of his going to WWE and when he’s starting and such, Penta did a tweet saying to stop the gossip and “My present is in AEW.” There were rumors going around he was going to NXT or getting a physical for WWE in Pittsburgh and he’s obviously not about to do anything of the sort while under AEW contract. He just as obviously can’t have signed a WWE deal until that AEW contract expires.”
The possible departure of the Lucha Brothers from AEW would be a significant loss for the company, given their impact and contributions over the years. With AEW potentially having the right to extend Rey Fenix’s contract, their possibly plans to join WWE or any other promotion might be derailed for now.
What are your thoughts on AEW potentially have the right to extend Rey Fenix’s contract? Do you thin they will exercise it? Sound off in the comments!
