John Cena has enjoyed numerous opportunities in Hollywood, and fans were eagerly anticipating Coyote vs. Acme, a Looney Tunes film that would finally spotlight Wile E. Coyote and feature the 16-time World Champion as a co-star. Unfortunately, the movie was shelved despite being nearly ready for release. There has already been an outcry for the film’s release. Now, Cena hopes that Warner Bros. Discovery shelved Coyote vs. Acme for the “right reasons.”

The storyline for Coyote vs. Acme centers on Wile E. Coyote suing the Acme Corporation after their products repeatedly fail him in his pursuit of the Road Runner. Set in the Acme warehouse, where all the Looney Tunes items are made, Wile E. teams up with a human attorney who is also unlucky. The two form a friendship that drives them to win the case against the lawyer’s former boss, now the CEO of Acme. The Road Runner becomes a surprise witness for Wile E., revealing a deeper relationship between the two.

Cena was part of the film, which was shelved in November last year, even though filming had been completed, and it had been screened for some audiences. There was speculation that the movie might still be released, but that did not happen. Warner Bros.’ decision faced significant criticism.

During the promotion of his new film Jackpot!, John Cena discussed the challenges of the movie business with TheWrap. He acknowledged that the director and everyone involved in the movie had invested their heart and soul, but it was never released.

“There’s a lot there. And everyone’s perspective is different. We don’t own the film. That’s the tough part about this business, you do have a sense of ownership because you invest heart and soul. And [director] Dave Green and everybody involved, we made what we thought was a good movie.”

Cena shared that he would have liked to see the movie given a chance but respects the “right reasons” behind its shelving. He would have preferred to see the film get an opportunity for some sort of release.

“I would have liked to seen it given a chance. But I’m just one person. And if it was shelved, I would have to think that it was shelved for the right reasons and it was a good business decision. I think I would have tremendous regret and shame if I look back on the legacy of the movie and it was shelved for reasons other than that.”

“So I have to believe in the process. And I love the movie, my heart and soul is in there, but it’s somebody else’s project to do what they want with and they’ve chosen accordingly.”

It remains to be seen whether Coyote vs. Acme will ever be released. For now, it seems the nearly completed film, which had the potential for Roger Rabbit vibes, was shelved for a tax break, similar to the much-discussed Batgirl film. Unfortunately, if this is the case, Cena’s hope that the movie was shelved for the “right reasons” may be a moot point.
