Kenny Omega’s tag team match with Chris Jericho for the AEW World Tag Team Championships was disrupted by Omega’s struggle with diverticulitis, a serious condition that required immediate surgery and delayed their plans. He already had surgery for the same and it appears Omega is making steady progress after surgery.
On the May 1 episode of AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega made his first appearance on television since December to update fans on his recovery from diverticulitis. However, his return was short-lived as he was ambushed by The Elite, which includes The Young Bucks, Jack Perry, and Kazuchika Okada. This attack led to Omega being written off television.
Since then, Kenny Omega has had surgery to address his condition and is currently in recovery. Fans are eagerly awaiting updates on when he will be able to return to in-ring action.
Michael Nakazawa spoke with Love-Spo to provide an update on Kenny Omega’s health status. The interviewer asked about Omega’s illness, specifically diverticulitis, which Omega had revealed on social media, causing concern among fans. Nakazawa explained that Omega has “diverticulitis of the large intestine,” a serious condition that could be fatal if not properly treated.
Omega first noticed symptoms after a match in Canada, where he experienced severe abdominal pain that persisted even after he returned to his home in Orlando, Florida. Nakazawa accompanied Omega to the hospital, where doctors informed him that he could have been in grave danger if he had delayed seeking medical attention.
Fortunately, Omega found a doctor who could treat his condition without invasive surgery. The treatment involved removing about 25 cm of the affected colon, and while Omega is recovering, he is currently unable to exert much strength in his abdomen. Nakazawa noted that despite the major surgery, Omega was impressively walking on his own. During his recovery, Nakazawa helped Omega by doing tasks like cleaning his cat Dobby’s litter box, as Omega could not bend down.
Omega has been gradually resuming physical training, incorporating rehabilitative exercises such as walking and pool workouts. However, he is not yet able to lift the same weights as before and is working hard to find the best training regimen for his current condition.
‘‘To be precise, it is a disease called “diverticulitis of the large intestine,” and it is a nasty disease that can be fatal if it is not treated properly. Kenny became aware of his symptoms just after a match in Canada, where his parents live. He was suffering from severe abdominal pain and was unable to enjoy his trip home at all, and the pain did not subside even after he returned to his home in Orlando, Florida. I accompanied him to the hospital at that time, and it turned out that he was so seriously ill that the doctor told him that he would have been in danger if he had come a few days later.
Fortunately, he was able to find a good doctor who could treat it without opening his abdomen, and just recently he underwent surgery and is currently recovering. However, it seems that the surgery involved removing about 25 cm of the affected colon, and he is now unable to put strength into his abdomen. However, I was impressed when I saw him walking on his own, even though it was a major surgery that would normally make it difficult for him to walk. By the way, Kenny has a cat named Dobby, and since he couldn’t bend down to clean his litter box, I went over there and helped him (laughs).
(Laughs) After that, little by little, he has been able to do physical training. He is still not able to lift the same weights as before, so he is trying to find the best training that he can do while incorporating rehabilitative elements such as walking and exercising in the pool, and he is working hard toward recovery. He is trying to find the best training he can do at the moment.’
Nakazawa stated that Omega’s condition involves significant physical impact, and it’s uncertain how this will affect his internal organs. Therefore, he could not provide a timeline for Omega’s return to the ring.
”That’s right. Since there is no power in the abdomen to begin with, there is a concern about whether or not one can perform in such a state. The impact is physically quite strong, so you never know how it will affect your internal organs. So I can’t say anything about when he will be able to return to work.”
An absent AEW star also plans on returning with Kenny Omega. Therefore, we will have to wait and see whether the Best Bout Machine will make his triumphant return to AEW this year, as fans definitely miss him a lot.
