AEW has signed numerous former WWE talents, but while many fans can easily name the wrestlers who have made the jump, there’s one key backstage figure whose impact might go unnoticed, former WWE writer Jen Pepperman. After leaving WWE, Pepperman joined AEW, continuing her working relationship with Mercedes Moné.
In early 2024, Pepperman took on the role of Vice President of Content Development for AEW, marking a major career shift just weeks after departing WWE. Her decision to join AEW quickly became a talking point within the wrestling community, and her influence was soon felt throughout the company.
Pepperman recently appeared on an episode of AEW Unrestricted, where she discussed her move to AEW and her ongoing partnership with Mercedes Moné. Pepperman is very excited to continue her work with The CEO.
“It initially started with a conversation with Mercedes. I worked very closely with her at WWE, so it started as this conversation of her having this really great opportunity to come to this really great company and would I have any interest of coming along with her. First, I have to say I adore Mercedes not only as a talent but a person. She’s one of those people, she’s just really special. She’s someone that has been a pioneer in this industry. People talk about breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings, well that’s exactly what Mercedes has done. She’s inspiring to me. I think Mercedes doesn’t really know how talented she is.”
Jen Pepperman spoke about how she and Mercedes Moné connected creatively during their time in WWE. She also acknowledged WWE as a place where she built many friendships.
“We just connected in a way creatively. I love the creative process, what I love most about that process is that it’s collaborative. I believe the creative process is the best when it’s collaborative, and Mercedes is a really great collaborator. We work really well together, and I just believe in her so much. The WWE was a really great place for me, I worked with a lot of great people, I have a lot of friends there. I wish them well. But for me, Mercedes and I, our working relationship was unique and special, and it was a chance to continue that journey.”
Since joining AEW, Pepperman has been praised by wrestlers and executives alike for the fresh perspective she has brought to the creative team. Her approach is seen as a new voice that has added depth and innovation to AEW’s content development.
Pepperman’s transition to AEW not only marks a new chapter in her career but also strengthens her bond with Moné, a relationship built on mutual respect and admiration during their time together in WWE. Having worked closely with Mercedes when she was Sasha Banks, Pepperman is ready to help create even more compelling stories for her in AEW.
As AEW prepares for All In on August 25, where Mercedes Moné is set to face Britt Baker, Pepperman’s influence may be seen as well. Moné, currently holding both the TBS Title and NJPW Strong Women’s Title, is on a creative journey that Pepperman is likely shaping. It remains to be seen how long Moné will retain her championships, but Pepperman’s role in her storylines will undoubtedly be significant.
