Pro wrestlers have occasionally ventured into acting, and WWE has even reversed an old Vince McMahon rule about Superstars taking outside acting gigs. AEW star Anthony Bowens is also eyeing big opportunities in this field outside the ring.

A mainstream story broke today about Joaquin Phoenix dropping out of Todd Haynes’ untitled gay romance film just five days before filming was set to begin in Mexico, citing “cold feet.” Entire sets had already been built, leaving the project in jeopardy, as Phoenix’s role cannot be easily recast. This sudden exit has left the crew out of work, with potential financial losses exceeding seven figures, impacting stakeholders and international distributors, sparking significant discussion as the news broke.

Actor Kit Williamson responded to a Variety article about Phoenix’s departure, stating, “What this really proves is that studios are ONLY comfortable making high budget ‘gay movies’ if there’s a straight lead. Even in a Todd Haynes movie. Even if it means losing 7 figures. They’re not interested in recasting, because a gay actor, to them, can never be a ‘star.'”

AEW star Anthony Bowens saw Williamson’s response and made a short but clear statement, quote retweeting the post to express his mission for change.

“I can and will change this one day.”

Anthony Bowens has been open and proud of his sexuality, though it hasn’t become central to his AEW storylines, they have acknowledged it in the past. Only time will tell what the future holds for Bowens, but he certainly doesn’t plan to stop at AEW.

Anthony Bowens has appeared in a couple of short films, and he is still building his IMDB page. Only time will tell if he finds that breakout role that could catapult him to another level. Then he may be in a position to turn heads and bring about social change, paving a trail for others to follow.

What’s your take on Anthony Bowens’ statement? Do you think that he could be a crossover success in Hollywood? Let us know what you think in the comments section!
