GUNTHER Reveals Why He ‘Stands Out From the Pack’ in WWE

GUNTHER’s reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion solidified his status as an all-time great, with a historic 666-day title run before losing it to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40. He didn’t stay without a title for long as he became the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at SummerSlam and now he has revealed why he stands out from the pack in WWE.

At the SummerSlam Premium Live Event, GUNTHER competed against Damian Priest for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a highly anticipated match. Finn Balor joined ringside midway through to support Priest.

The match concluded with Priest delivering a Razor’s Edge and a South of Heaven to GUNTHER. As Priest went for the pin, Balor interfered by placing GUNTHER’s foot on the rope. After seeing the replay, Priest tried to confront Balor, but GUNTHER stopped him. Priest then applied a sleeper hold to Balor, ultimately winning his first world title in WWE.

GUNTHER has distinguished himself in WWE with a character that resonates in today’s wrestling world. In a recent interview on Hall of Fame, he talked about the significance of generating genuine fan reactions and ensuring his persona feels authentic. He acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining this authenticity in an era when audiences are more aware that wrestling is scripted.

GUNTHER noted that despite everyone knowing wrestling is scripted entertainment, his goal is to make fans feel like they are witnessing something real and special when he enters the ring.

“I mean it’s 2024 now, everybody knows what we do is scripted, it’s sports entertainment. But I always wanted to make it my goal when I walk to the ring that the people’s reaction is like, ‘Okay, now it’s getting real, like now we’re in for something special,'” said Gunther. “And I always try to get the people to forget about the fact that what we do is entertainment and just be in the moment and make them feel for my opponent and that’s what I’m always aiming for. I think over time, that’s what made me stand out from the pack.” 

GUNTHER is now set to defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Randy Orton at Bash in Berlin on August 31st, so we’ll have to see how The Ring General will fare against The Viper in their rematch.
