MJF has quite an interesting method of gaining engagement on social media. The Salt of the Earth is no stranger to taking great steps to get heat from fans, but his current American gimmick isn’t setting well with some of them. It is also giving them plenty of ammunition to take shots at him for being like The Hulkster.
Hulk Hogan is a very controversial name in pro wrestling. Hogan’s recent support of Donald Trump was just the cherry on top of a career full of stories about lies and racism. MJF has also made it clear in the past that he doesn’t support the 2-time WWE Hall of Famer.
MJF is currently on a mission to challenge foreigners as the AEW American Champion. To promote his upcoming match against Michael Oku, MJF shared a post declaring himself a “Real American.”
“Tonight in the land of neo-Nazis roaming the street and very poorly seasoned food, I vanquish another red coat terrorist in the name of liberty and justice for all. Why? Because I am a real American.”
Fans quickly caught onto the “Real American” reference, as it is also the title of Hulk Hogan’s entrance music. One fan commented, “Partner up with Hulk Hogan already,” while another added, “Oh come on, go full Hogan/Slaughter 91 lmfao controversy sells.”
The replies included a few humorous memes, such as one where MJF’s face was Photoshopped onto The Hulkster’s body. Unfortunately, a couple of antisemitic posts also appeared, but we will not be sharing those here.
Amidst the trolling, MJF received support from some fans. Whether they were boosting his ego in typical internet fashion or not, it was clear that everyone had a lot of fun with this post from the current AEW American Champion.
MJF is set to defend his American Title against Will Ospreay at All In at Wembley Stadium. There’s speculation that there may be another title change during the show, as it could provide Ospreay with a big moment. Only time will tell how it all unfolds, but fans don’t seem to be on board with MJF’s new gimmick.
We’ll have to see how MJF’s character evolves over time. Currently, the reception might be considered “go away heat,” which isn’t the preferred reaction in this business. Nonetheless, MJF is determined to generate heat in any way he can.
