Jesse Ventura is known for his controversial political views, often stirring debate with his outspoken opinions. His unexpected return to WWE’s backstage during their recent trip to Minnesota surprised many. There is a greater reason why this was so controversial.

During his recent RAW visit, Jesse Ventura spent time meeting various wrestlers and catching up with old friends he hadn’t seen in years, including CM Punk. While it was notable to see him backstage in 2024 after such a long absence, his appearance for the company in the summer of 1999 seemed even more unlikely at the time.

During SummerSlam 1999, Ventura served as the special guest referee for the main event where Mankind defeated Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin to become the WWF Champion, despite Ventura holding office as the Governor of Minnesota. Jim Ross highlighted on his Grilling JR podcast that there was a deeper reason why Ventura’s return was so surprising.

“It was controversial, to say the least. Jesse had a lawsuit against WWE that infuriated Vince [McMahon], and over time it just lessened. It’s funny how time can heal a lot of wounds.”

The lawsuit stemmed from Ventura being informed that only wrestlers would receive home video royalties, excluding him from earning money for his commentary work during the shows. Ventura took the matter to the Minnesota State Court, seeking $2 million in royalties from Titan Sports. After the case moved to federal court, Ventura won over $800,000 following a jury verdict. Meanwhile, his commentary was edited out of many early WWE home video releases.

Ventura’s run ins with WWE were not limited to that lawsuit. He also tried to organize a pro wrestlers union decades ago, but Hulk Hogan famously squashed that idea.

We will have to see what Jesse Venture does next to drum up attention. He is making the media rounds once again at this time due to the 2024 Presidential election, explaining that he’s in his 70s and wants to see a woman as POTUS before he dies. That is why he lent his support to Kamala Harris for her presidential campaign. Only time will tell when he makes it back to WWE, but it seems that the relationship is okay between the two sides now.
