The Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson, have long been a powerhouse in the wrestling industry, not just in the ring but also on the business side of things. However, their success hasn’t shielded them from criticism, particularly regarding their personalities and what they represent. A new development has now shed light on why the AEW Tag Team Champions have been notably absent from title defenses, much to the frustration of fans.
The Jackson brothers clinched the AEW Tag Team Championships at the Dynasty pay-per-view earlier this year, with a little help from a returning Jack Perry. But since that victory, they haven’t defended the titles, leaving many fans angered and questioning the reason for their absence.
Bryan Alvarez addressed this issue on the Bryan and Vinny show, clarifying that The Young Bucks do not control their own booking decisions. Alvarez emphasized that if fans are upset about the lack of title defenses, they should direct their frustrations toward AEW President Tony Khan.
Alvarez suggested that the situation might be tied to the terms of The Young Bucks’ contracts, which could include a limited number of appearances, or it might be a financial decision on Khan’s part. He compared this scenario to Brock Lesnar’s past WWE appearances, where Lesnar had a set number of dates and was told to stay home when the promotion chose not to pay him for additional appearances.
“Listen everybody, if you think The Young Bucks book their own stuff? They don’t,” Alvarez said. “If you’re upset about the Bucks not being on TV and not defending their tag team titles, there’s one person you can be upset at and that’s Tony Khan. Because whatever contract they signed, it was for X number of dates and he doesn’t want to pay them, maybe he has plans for them at the end of the year or they used a bunch of dates at the beginning of the year, I don’t know, but it’s not The Young Bucks deciding ‘Hey, we’re gonna take the Summer off and not defend the tag team titles.’ Remember when people got mad at Brock Lesnar for not showing up, it was like Brock was calling his shots. He had X number of dates, they didn’t want to pay him for extended periods of time, so they told him to stay home.”
Despite the criticism and the current lack of title defenses, The Elite, including The Young Bucks, remain a cornerstone of AEW television. However, the clock is ticking, as they are expected to defend their titles at the highly anticipated AEW All In event. Whether they will retain or drop the titles remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: The Young Bucks’ presence, or lack thereof, continues to stir discussion in the wrestling world.
With The Young Bucks’ absence from title defenses stirring up so much discussion, do you think it’s more about strategic planning by Tony Khan, or could there be other factors at play? How do you feel about the way AEW is handling their tag team champions? Share your thoughts and feedback in the comments below!
