Vince McMahon, formerly a board member of TKO Holdings, is embroiled in human trafficking lawsuit, but there is no denying his influence in the world of professional wrestling. With that said, Eric Bischoff claims Tony Khan badly wants to be seen like Vince McMahon.
Late last month, Bill Goldberg talked about his views on AEW CEO Tony Khan during a podcast, where he compared Khan to former TNA Wrestling promoter Dixie Carter but chose not to delve into details.
While speaking on the Wise Choices podcast, former WCW executive Eric Bischoff weighed in on Goldberg’s comparison. Bischoff pointed out several similarities between Khan and Carter, noting that Carter aspired to be like Vince McMahon but allowed that ambition to overshadow her business responsibilities.
“There are several similarities that jump out at me right away,” Bischoff said. “[Carter] wanted to be the female Vince McMahon so bad.”
Bischoff indicated that Khan exhibits a similar desire to be seen as a major promoter in the vein of McMahon or Paul Heyman, but Bischoff believes Khan will fall short of achieving that level of impact. According to Eric Bischoff, while Tony Khan may spend a lot of money in the industry, he is unlikely to have the significant influence that those historical figures have had.
“I see a lot of that with Tony,” Bischoff continued. “Tony wants so badly to be considered a Vince McMahon, in Vince’s prime. Or to achieve what Vince did, or Paul Heyman, or probably ever yours truly back in the 90s — to be in that kind of fraternity of major league promoters that had a major impact on the industry. And he’s never gonna be that guy — he’s gonna be the guy that spent a lot of money in the industry, but he’s never gonna have that impact.”
Billy Gunn also previously defended Tony Khan against trolls who tried to undermine him. Regardless, Tony Khan will continue to run AEW the way he sees fit and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
