Nigel McGuinness has been part of the AEW family for well over two years now and his commentary contributions are definitely one of the best things in the company right now. He hasn’t competed in the ring in a long time and it appears he is still willing to come out of retirement for Bryan Danielson.

Nigel McGuinness has provided commentary for both ROH and AEW Collision, but fans wondered whether he would actually return to the squared circle. That never happened as McGuinness confirmed a match with Bryan Danielson was not going to happen at AEW All In last year due to Danielson’s injury.

While speaking with Chris Van Vliet, the commentator mentioned he’s interested in possibly wrestling Danielson and praised Christian Cage and Adam Copeland. He said AEW has a lot of young talent, and he admires how Cage and Copeland are still impressive in the ring and help younger wrestlers learn.

“It certainly feels like that. You know what I mean? It certainly feels like that. All roads to me, I think certainly aimed towards him. Because there’s so much talent in AEW, so many young guys who deserve those spots. I’m very inspired by Christian Cage, obviously, and Adam Copeland as much as I’d hate to admit it. These guys can show that they haven’t lost a step. They can still go and all the knowledge that they have, they can convey and pass on to the next generation by being in the ring with them as well.”

McGuiness also admitted that his only in-ring goal right now is to have a match with Bryan Danielson. Even though he feels ready to wrestle, he doesn’t want to leave his job as a commentator or become a full-time wrestler. His focus is mainly on the chance to face Bryan.

“I’ve been like, wow. Getting back in the ring I felt like, wow, it is so strange realisation when you figure out that the only thing stopping you being a wrestler is you. Now, having said that I’ve certainly got no desire to step away from the announcing booth. I don’t want to become a full-time wrestler. I don’t really want to wrestle anymore, to be honest with you. Other than beating Bryan, obviously, because that’s our story. There’s our history.”

Interestingly enough, Nigel McGuinness revealed that he got back into the ring earlier this year. Bryan Danielson would also admit he is afraid of fan expectations if he and McGuinness ever square off against each other again, so we’ll have to wait and see if the match will ever happen inside an AEW ring.

Do you feel it’s simply unfortunate Nigel McGuinness hasn’t been able to compete in AEW yet? Will he get to face Bryan Danielson? Sound off in the comments section below!
