Mercedes Mone’s arrival in AEW has notably impacted the promotion, especially with her holding both the TBS Championship and the NJPW Women’s Strong Championship. Despite her success, Eric Bischoff has suggested that Mone might have reason to be concerned about her position in AEW due to the recent decline in ratings.
It was previously reported that Mercedes Mone is the highest paid women’s wrestler in the business right now. There are quite a few fans who feel Mone is worth the price considering how much the AEW women’s division has improved since her arrival.
While speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff talked about Mercedes Mone’s current run in AEW and the impact she has had on ratings. Bischoff noted that she joined with a reportedly high contract, rumored to be over $5 million, making her one of the highest-paid women wrestlers.
Bischoff pointed out that the ratings for Dynamite during the four weeks prior to her arrival were higher than those of her debut episode. This drop in ratings, along with the significant decrease in viewership since her debut, reveals a concerning trend. Bischoff expressed that if he were in Mercedes’ position, he would be worried about the high price tag and the creative control reportedly given to her. The drop in audience numbers, despite her demands and creative influence, is a key indicator of her impact.
“When you look at, especially Mercedes, she comes in with her reportedly—though we don’t know if it’s true—$5 million-plus contract, one of the highest-paid women wrestlers. If you compare the four-week ratings for Dynamite before her arrival with her premiere episode—which, by the way, was lower than the four-week average that preceded her arrival—that should tell you something right off the bat. But then, you see how much the ratings have dropped since she came on board. It’s embarrassing. Those are the numbers that matter. If I were Mercedes, I’d be terrified to put such a high price tag on myself, demand reportedly—though we don’t know if it’s true—creative control, and then exercise that creative control only to lose ground and audience in the process. That’s a number that matters.”
Mercedes Mone was also called out for constantly complaining about WWE. However, Mone is also advocating for the AEW Women’s Division behind closed doors, so we’ll have to see whether her impact will eventually help ratings as well.
