Bryan Danielson, recognized as one of the top professional wrestlers globally, is set to conclude his full-time in-ring career this year. He has now addressed his future roles in AEW after he retires from active competition.
For several months, Danielson has been outspoken about his plans to retire from full-time wrestling in 2024 to devote more time to his family. While a specific date or event for his final match has not yet been confirmed, fans remain curious about how Danielson will ultimately conclude his wrestling career.
While speaking on Gorilla Position, The American Dragon was asked if he will have any role in AEW following his retirement. Danielson said he’s not sure exactly what his new role will be after retirement. Right now, he helps with creative ideas informally—Tony Khan might call him to discuss ideas, but it doesn’t happen regularly.
Danielson also mentioned that he wants to avoid traveling too much because it can be hard on his body. He’s open to finding a balance between what AEW wants from him and what he’s willing to do. If it ends up being just offering ideas over the phone without a formal arrangement, he’s okay with that.
“So I don’t know, because I don’t know what that looks like. So, like, kind of how it looks now is I help with creative a little bit. And what that usually looks like is it’s not necessarily like a formal creative meeting or anything like that. Tony will call me and run some ideas past me, or he’ll say, ‘Hey, I was thinking of this. Do you have any ideas for this?’ or something like that. But that’s haphazard, you know? It could happen three times in a week; it could not happen at all for three weeks, right? You know, that sort of thing. So I don’t really know what that part of it will look like. I think it’s just going to kind of have to evolve naturally and with whatever my comfort level is and their comfort level is as far as, because I honestly, I don’t want to travel very much. So that’s another piece of the wrestling puzzle.
As far as physically, I think a lot of wrestlers will tell you that sometimes the travel hurts your body more than the actual wrestling, you know? And so it’s like, it’s just doing it all the time and that sort of thing. So we’re just going to have to find some sort of compromise as far as what they would like me to do and what I would be willing to do. And if it turns out to not be anything, that’s okay too, you know what I mean? And if it turns out to be something where it’s just like, I’ll always be available on the phone if Tony just wants to call me and run some ideas past me. I mean, I’m not going to charge a fee for that.”
Danielson is set to challenge Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Championship at AEW All In. In fact, Danielson put his career on the line against Strickland at All In, so we’ll have to see how he will fare in the match first before his eventual retirement.
