Mercedes Mone’s arrival in AEW has obviously changed the promotion’s landscape when it comes to the women’s division. However, she has been vocal about her problems in WWE and she has now been called out for the same.

Mercedes Mone notably walked out of WWE in May 2022, alongside Naomi. Her departure was reportedly attributed to creative frustrations and concerns about her position within the women’s division.

Mercedes Mone recently claimed that WWE imposed restrictions on her for filming ‘The Mandalorian’ and stated that it was like pulling teeth. Her comments made her subject of controversy as well. Mone would then confirm she has creative control in AEW as well.

While speaking to Bill Apter, Jonathan Coachman talked about Mercedes Mone and mentioned that when trying to succeed in wrestling, it’s important not to come off as arrogantly self-important.

Coachman noted that Tony Khan, who comes across as a fan, made a big deal about being the “biggest free agent signing of all time,” which Coachman found hard to imagine. He also pointed out that if someone controls their own creative direction, it can lead to problems and bad promos, as repeating the same things too often can make the crowd react negatively.

“I think when you’re trying to get over in the business, it’s important to avoid coming off as an arrogant heel just for the sake of it. I love trying to get that character over, but right now, Tony Khan seems to come off as a fan, which he is, 100%. But I can’t imagine a scenario, even though Vince McMahon was very hands-on, where a superstar would walk into the building and announce themselves as the ‘biggest free agent signing of all time,’ as Tony Khan did. I would never imagine someone claiming to control their own creative direction. If you control your own creative, then that’s a problem because it often results in poor promos. When you repeat the same things over and over, eventually, the crowd will react negatively, as we’ve seen recently when she was told to ‘Shut the F up.”

Coachman praised The Rock for working with a great writer, Brian Gewirtz, which helped him succeed. He stressed that having a good writer is crucial and that it’s important for writers and talent to work well together. He mentioned that although a recent big writer got some recognition in AEW, it’s important that Mercedes Mone should focus on developing her character instead of complaining about WWE and what she didn’t get from the company.

The Rock was great because he had an incredible writer, Brian Gewirtz. I worked with Brian at the beginning of my career, and having a good writer can create magic. It’s about finding that perfect match between the writer and the talent. They need a lot of help in that area. I know they signed a big writer recently—I can’t remember her name—who got some credit yesterday. I’ve met her a few times when she was in WWE. She needs to focus on work on her character and stop complaining about what you didn’t get in WWE.”

Mercedes Mone is also advocating for the AEW Women’s Division behind closed doors. Regardless of what anyone has to say, Mercedes Mone will continue to do what she feels is right for her and that’s what matters to her right now.
