Vince McMahon is no longer running WWE under his thumb, and there has been a noticeable shift in direction since he retired. Now, as WWE continues on without him at the helm, it is becoming a bit safer to tell stories about some of the less savory things he did while running the global pro wrestling powerhouse.

Jonathan Coachman recently spoke to Bill Apter for WrestleBinge, when Vince McMahon came up in the conversation. Mr. McMahon was never the easiest boss to have, and it was also evident that he only really cared about his own interests. This was made very clear to Coach, but it took a bit of time.

When asked for his thoughts on Vince McMahon, Coachman, who worked closely with the former WWE chairman during his time in the company, explained why he doesn’t like to comment on him:

“I don’t really have any thoughts about him in 2024, to be honest with you. I don’t like to comment on him because, at one point, I was around him a lot, and I took a lot from what he taught us.”

Jonathan Coachman joined WWE as a backstage interviewer in 1999. He gradually climbed the ladder and was working as a commentator on SmackDown when he left the company in 2008.

Coachman revealed the positive and negative aspects of working with McMahon. When asked to elaborate, he gave an example of things he regrets. Coach also revealed when it finally dawned on him that Vince McMahon didn’t care about his family.

“The positive stuff is learning how when the red light comes on, timing, emphasis, storytelling, all the stuff that kind of makes high-level pro wrestling what it is. Also, the grind. We were forced into the grind, and in my first 10-year run, I only missed one Monday night. I look back on it now, and there’s a lot of regrets I have as far as things I missed because we couldn’t stand up for ourselves.

“I was at Christmas Eve, and I was back home in Kansas. You get a call to come back and shoot something in Connecticut. Because he wanted to go to Florida to be with his family and really didn’t care about my family. So I did it because I never told him…. I only told him no once, and I got beat up for that. So, it is what it is.”

Vince McMahon resigned from WWE last week after a former employee, Janel Grant, accused him in a lawsuit of inflicting “psychological torture and physical violence” and making “depraved sexual demands” in exchange for her continued employment. Although McMahon’s exit from the company is final, the serious allegations in Grant’s lawsuit continue to move through the legal system. In his absence, Triple H received far more power and influence in WWE.

The lawsuit has created significant turmoil within WWE, as McMahon had been a central figure in the company for decades. His departure marks the end of an era, but the legal proceedings are far from over. On July 25th, McMahon filed a motion to lift the court-ordered stay in the lawsuit filed by Grant against him, WWE, and John Laurinaitis. This motion seeks to move forward with certain aspects of the case despite the stay that was previously imposed by the court.

According to the filing, “Mr. McMahon now asks the Court for a limited lifting of the stay to permit the filing and adjudication of his Motion to Enforce the Court’s Stay Order.” This move suggests that McMahon is seeking to address specific legal points in the case, potentially to resolve or mitigate some of the claims against him.
