WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan’s impact on professional wrestling is legendary, and now his larger-than-life story is set to be captured in a new biopic. The director for Hogan’s upcoming film, “Killing Gawker,” has been confirmed.
To recap, Hulk Hogan’s legal battle with Gawker started in 2013 when he sued the media company for publishing excerpts of a private tape. The case, which took three years to resolve, targeted Gawker, its employees, and its affiliates. The tape also featured racist comments made by Hogan, which resulted in WWE cutting ties with him. Ultimately, the jury sided with Hogan, finding Gawker liable and awarding him over $120 million in damages.
On Monday, August 5, Jeff Sneider reported that Gus Van Sant will direct the upcoming biopic “Killing Gawker,” which will explore Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker over the release of his sex tape. The film will star Ben Affleck as Hulk Hogan and Matt Damon as Peter Thiel. The script, written by Charles Randolph, is based on the book Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue.
Van Sant, known for directing the acclaimed 1997 film Good Will Hunting, will bring his experience to this project. That film also featured Affleck and Damon, along with Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgard, Casey Affleck, and Minnie Driver. Good Will Hunting earned Van Sant an Academy Award nomination for Best Director among its eight total nominations.
We’ll have to wait and see if the biopic comes to fruition, but the prospect of Ben Affleck playing Hulk Hogan certainly intrigues many fans for good reason.
