SummerSlam 2024 had a lot of things going for it as the energy was at an incredible rate throughout the show. The company also tried to introduce something new with the ‘Ref cam’ but it led to mixed results and even Seth Rollins removed it during the show. In light of Rollins’ actions, WWE’s internal reaction has been revealed.
WWE debuted a new feature called “Ref cam” during SummerSlam 2024, which provided a feed from the referee’s shirt, giving fans a close-up view of the action in the ring. While it offered a unique perspective, it wasn’t always clear or well-timed for major moments.
During the CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre match, which saw CM Punk lose to Drew McIntyre due to his own actions, Special Guest Referee Seth Rollins was seen removing and discarding the Ref cam.
According to Corey Brennan of Fightful Select, the battery pack from the Ref Cam fell off during the match, and Rollins decided to take it off himself. There was no heat on Rollins, as it was anticipated that technical issues with the Ref cam could occur.
“Told that the battery pack fell off of the ref cam during McIntyre vs Punk and Rollins made the decision to take the camera off.
No heat on Seth, as it was seen as a possibility beforehand.”
Innovation is something WWE is always something that strives for but that doesn’t mean it will always turn out to be a home run. We will have to wait and see whether the Ref cam will make a return or if they will scrap the concept entirely.
