The pro wrestling world never forgets about someone once they dedicate a portion of their life to the business. This is certainly the case for Steve “Mongo” McMichael, as he is currently suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease. He received a huge honor from outside the pro wrestling world, as McMichael is now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Steve McMichael has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the city he was most known to play for made sure he saw and heard everything. This was a touching moment, captured on camera for the world to see as they celebrated a legendary career.
Steve McMichael joined fellow Chicago Bears as part of Canton’s Hall of Fame class for 2024. Due to his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease, the NFL legend turned pro wrestler was unable to physically be at the ceremony. Mongo’s wife, Misty, was there in attendance and saw the bust of her husband revealed to the fans. Then they planned something special for him later.
Much to his surprise, the Hall of Fame was brought to Mongo. Several other Hall of Famers including Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, and Jim Covert all arrived to McMichael’s home. This resulted in a great moment that was captured on video.
Ric Flair, who has frequently visited McMichael during his ALS battle, went to social media to wish congratulations to one of his closest friends. He posted a couple images of the special ceremony along with a touching caption.
“He’s In!! Congratulations My Great Friend Steve “Mongo” McMichael. You Made It! So Well Deserved! What A Beautiful Ceremony! And Needless To Say, You Would Always Want Me To Say WOOOOO!”
ESPN also shared the video of the induction, along with a caption reading, “That’s you baby, forever.” This was certainly a special moment for a lot of fans, especially McMichael and his family.
Steve McMichael was involved in pro wrestling, football, and MLB history. He was at Wrigley Field on August 7, 2001, to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch. Before singing, McMichael publicly criticized controversial umpire Angel Hernandez for his calls, saying he’d have something to say to “that home plate umpire” after the game and yelling “boo!” at him. Cameras caught Hernandez looking up at McMichael, and he didn’t look happy. Mongo was later ejected from the game.
We’re sending out our best to Steve McMichael as he continues fighting that terrible illness. His legendary career could be discussed for hours, and he certainly has no shortage of supporters.
