SummerSlam 2024 included seven matches that WWE invested a lot of time in, but no match had the same build as Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk. The two had to figure out how to keep their feud going for months when Punk was out of action with a triceps injury, but they finally faced off in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

CM Punk faced Drew McIntyre in a singles match at SummerSlam, with Seth “Freakin” Rollins as the special guest referee. Rollins made it clear that the match would only have one rule: he made the rules. That meant disqualifications, count outs, and pinfalls were all up to the Visionary.

As the match started, Michael Cole confirmed that CM Punk was picked up from the airport in Cleveland. This was an obvious dig at how AEW did not pick Punk up before All In last year. Once the match began, Rollins made sure that Punk and McIntyre knew that he was in control, and they moved to the outside without Seth counting them out.

Punk took a slingshot move while McIntyre had him underneath the ring apron. This was a brutal move that slowed things down significantly. McIntyre continued his assault on Punk, but he could not secure the win as Seth Rollins counted proper pinfall attempts like an impartial referee.

Drew McIntyre decided to test the rules next, so he grabbed a steel chair. He told Rollins to “turn around and let this happen,” and then Rollins did just that before quickly turning back around to grab the chair. They paid tribute to Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker’s SummerSlam 1997 spot with the chair, but Rollins stopped before he was able to hit Punk. Interestingly, that match took place 27 years ago today.

They continued on, and CM Punk picked up McIntyre for a GTS, but Rollins distracted him because he was wearing the bracelet that had AJ Lee and Larry’s names on it. Rollins was taken out by accident, and then Punk nailed a GTS. Rollins rolled back into the ring to count, but Drew kicked out at two.

Punk was not happy, and he got in Rollins’ face. Seth continued explaining himself and said, “it’s not always about you, asshole,” so Punk hit him with a GTS. “It ain’t always about me, but it’s never about you,” Punk said to Rollins.

Then Drew nailed Punk with a low blow and a Claymore Kick. Seth Rollins crawled over and counted to three, making the Scottish Warrior the winner. Drew ended the match by putting the bracelet back on his wrist, and then he posed over a beaten Second City Saint.
