CM Punk shocked the wrestling world by making his triumphant return to WWE back in November at the Survivor Series event. While many are happy to see him back, others feel differently and think he will walk out of WWE again and now he has addressed haters who make such claims.
In 2014, CM Punk’s relationship with WWE deteriorated over several issues, including creative conflicts with Vince McMahon, health concerns, and disagreements over merchandise royalties. Feeling undervalued and mistreated by WWE management, Punk’s frustration reached a breaking point, leading to a highly publicized walkout and his release from the company on his wedding day.
Even though CM Punk has been back in WWE for a while now, quite a few people think it’s just a matter of time before The Second City Saint does something controversial and walks out of the company again.
While speaking on Countdown to SummerSlam, CM Punk was asked about his message for critics who are waiting for “the old CM Punk” to resurface and possibly leave the company again. Punk responded by acknowledging that these critics are actually his biggest fans. He noted that no one pays more attention than those who dislike him the most, and he sees them as just the opposite side of the fan spectrum.
Punk stated that his polarizing nature means he can either be very helpful or very confrontational and how people react to him says more about them than about him. He expressed that being told he cannot do something has always been a major motivator in his life and career. Punk believes that his popularity stems from his willingness to be different, not conform, and persist despite obstacles.
“They’re bigger fans than my biggest fans. Nobody watches you more than your biggest hater, and to me they’re just the flip side of the fan coin. They’re all fans, everybody pays attention to what CM Punk does.
CM Punk is polarizing, yes. He’s the first guy to reach into his pocket and help you out with some money, or the first guy to punch you in the face, it says more about them than it does me.
What’s more motivating than when someone says you cannot? I think that’s been the basis of my entire life, let alone my entire career.
That’s what has made me popular, being different, not conforming and just never taking no for an answer.”
CM Punk is set to square off against Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam on August 3rd, which has been several months in the making. Should he win, it will be a huge message to his haters who want him to fail, so we’ll have to see how he will perform in the match.
