Drew McIntyre has been on a strong winning streak for months, and his feud with CM Punk has escalated with both exchanging sharp words and engaging in physical confrontations. McIntyre has now claimed that CM Punk sabotaged his first WWE run.
In his ongoing feud with CM Punk, Drew McIntyre has often brought up Punk’s tumultuous past, including his controversial stint in AEW. As their rivalry intensified, Punk revealed on the July 22nd episode of WWE Raw that he had been medically cleared to compete. This announcement set the stage for their eagerly anticipated match at WWE SummerSlam.
While speaking to Sam Roberts, Drew McIntyre was asked if his issues with CM Punk began in November of last year. Drew McIntyre explained that the issues date back well before November of last year, extending to his first run in WWE. He has hinted at various grievances but has not fully detailed them yet. He mentioned that CM Punk had a direct impact on his opportunities and saw him as a threat in his younger days, which negatively affected McIntyre’s momentum.
McIntyre noted that while Punk was given everything and never seemed satisfied, taking his ball and leaving when things didn’t go his way, McIntyre had to be fired, reinvent himself, and work tirelessly to reach the top again. He expressed frustration that Punk now seems to think he can take McIntyre’s spot, labeling him as disrespectful and insincere.
“The story goes back way before [November last year]. It goes back to my first run in WWE. I’ve alluded to certain things constantly. I’ve still not told those stories, maybe I won’t, but there are feelings that go back that far. There are opportunities that were prevented directly involving Punk, and I know he saw me as a threat when I was younger. He adversely affected my momentum.
And now I’ve taken the road I’ve taken, I had to get fired. He was a guy that was given everything at the time—literally, ‘What can we do to make you happy?’ The guy could not be pleased, took his ball and went home, and sat on his ass for years. I got fired, reinvented myself, worked my ass off, and worked my way back to the top. And the prick thinks if he can take my spot, he can think again. This guy is an absolute ass.”
Drew McIntyre even met up with Jack Perry to further troll CM Punk for good measure. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether The Scottish Warrior will get his revenge on CM Punk at SummerSlam on August 3rd, as a lot is riding the match.
