GUNTHER’s reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion solidified his status as an all-time great, with a historic 666-day title run before losing it to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40. However, it has come to light that he nearly walked away from professional wrestling entirely long before his debuted in WWE.

The Ring General, known for his deep passion for professional wrestling, has always stayed true to his character, understanding its significance. He joined WWE NXT UK in 2019, where he quickly established himself as a dominant force. His success in NXT UK paved the way for his move to WWE NXT and eventually the main roster in 2022.

While speaking to SHAK Wrestling, GUNTHER was asked about the lowest point of his professional wrestling career. GUNTHER revealed that 2013 or 2014 was the lowest point of his career.

GUNTHER revealed that he was wrestling only on weekends while working a day job with night shifts. This schedule became unsustainable, and he was considering quitting wrestling to focus on his main job. However, after discussing the situation with WXW, he was offered the opportunity to run their wrestling school. This arrangement allowed him to make professional wrestling his full-time career.

“I would say it must have been around 2013 or 2014, I think, because at that point I was just wrestling on the weekends. I still had a day job and was working night shifts, which I did for almost two years. Wrestling on the weekends took a toll on me, and it was hard to sustain. My goal was always to make a living from professional wrestling, and that wasn’t really in sight. I thought about calling it quits and focusing on my real job.

But then I spoke to WXW and said, ‘Hey guys, you have a wrestling school now, so either I run that wrestling school for you and that’s my job, or I call it quits.’ They were happy to have me do that, and they wanted to run a wrestling school. They employed me, and since then, professional wrestling has been my main profession.”

Thankfully, GUNTHER stuck with wrestling and the results speak for themselves. GUNTHER is set to challenge Damian Priest for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and it is expected fans will see him appear regularly on WWE television and build his feud with Priest, so we’ll have to see who will ultimately triumph at SummerSlam next month.
