CM Punk Admits Lack of Control Over AJ Lee’s Wrestling Return

AJ Lee’s storied career in WWE came to its conclusion when she stepped away from the ring in 2015, right after WrestleMania 31. Rumors about her comeback have persisted despite her departure, especially after she shared a photo of her old ring gear.

However, AJ Lee has confirmed that she remains retired, much to her fans’ disappointment. In November of the previous year, her husband, CM Punk, mentioned Lee during his WWE return promo, sparking further speculation about her potential return. Despite these rumours, reports indicated no discussions had occurred regarding her comeback.

During a recent interview on the SI Media podcast, CM Punk admitted that although, as a fan, he would like to see AJ Lee return to WWE, citing her incredible influence and career, he would never force her to come back to wrestling if she did not want it.

“You cannot possibly push my wife in any direction she does not want to go. I get this question every single time I am interviewed, I do not mind because it makes sense to me, because I am … as big a fan of AJ Lee as your niece or all her legions of fans. You know, she inspired a generation of female wrestlers and I think you see a lot come through NXT now, there are some on the indies and everything like that. So what she did resonated. As a fan, 100%, I would do cartwheels if she came back, but I cannot make her do anything, you know and that’s not the relationship we have. I would never try to force her to do anything I wouldn’t want to do myself.”

Fans have been eagerly awaiting to see if AJ Lee will make a surprising return to WWE television. While CM Punk did hint that AJ is not looking at a return time and time again, the famous saying “never say never” in wrestling gives many hope that AJ Lee would indeed return someday.
