Athena was released by WWE back in 2021 and eventually made her way to AEW. However, she has now been a mainstay of ROH television since 2022 and Athena has now confirmed she is still in talks with Tony Khan about an AEW return.
At ROH Death Before Dishonor, Athena successfully defended her ROH Women’s World Championship against Queen Aminata, marking her record-breaking 600th day as champion and making her the second-longest reigning champion in Ring of Honor history.
As Athena approaches the possibility of becoming the longest-reigning champion in ROH history, fans are eagerly awaiting her return to AEW programming. While speaking in a recent interview with Stephanie Chase, Athena shared that she frequently discusses her AEW return with Tony Khan.
Athena mentioned that their conversations often revolve around how her appearances, such as at Battle of the Belts and various pre-shows with Billie Starkz and Lexi Nair, are gradually setting the stage for her return.
“It’s something that Tony and I talk about quite a bit in person, It’s like, ‘Okay, we did Battle of the Belts, we’re sprinkling it here and there. We’ve done pre-shows on multiple pay-per-views with myself and Billie [Starkz] and Lexi [Nair] in there as well.’ I think it’s just a matter of time.”
With Timeless Toni Storm defending the AEW Women’s World Championship against Mariah May and Mercedes Mone contending with Britt Baker for the TBS Championship, the AEW women’s division appears quite crowded. Despite this, Athena believes she is the division’s best-kept secret and is ready to showcase her skills. She stated that when she does return to AEW, she will dominate the competition, emphasizing that anyone who hasn’t been paying attention to her work in ROH will be in for a surprise.
“When I come to AEW, I’m beating the breaks off of all these hussies, and they’re not going to be able to stand toe-to-toe. So if I’m the best kept secret, they should have been watching ROH.”
We will have to wait and see whether Athena will make her way back to AEW somewhere down the line, as fans do want to see her on AEW television again. In the meantime, she continues to be booked as one of the greatest female pro wrestlers in the modern era on ROH.
