The Undertaker has experienced a lot in the pro wrestling business. Although he has retired from in-ring competition, he has taken on a new role as a significant voice in the industry. He has watched CM Punk’s departure from WWE and his eventual return. Despite Punk’s limited success in MMA, The Undertaker respects his efforts.
Although The Undertaker did implement some MMA style punches and other moves to his in-ring stories, he never competed in the Octagon. After all, you can have all the training in the world, but it’s a different situation entirely when it’s time to fight in the cage.
Speaking to Demetrious Johnson on the MightyCast, The Undertaker shared his thoughts on Punk’s venture into MMA. The Phenom gave the Second City Saint his flowers for making the leap to UFC to give MMA a try.
“One thing with Punk that I do respect is the fact that he tried it. He had a huge name in wrestling before he tried mixed martial arts. He had a lot to lose because [wrestling] was his money maker and then you go over [to MMA] and get your ass handed to you. I had a lot of respect for him and the fact that he gave it a shot. It was something he wanted to do. He did it. It didn’t work out and he’s back where he should be and everything is right in the world.”
In December 2014, CM Punk announced he had signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC. Punk had trained in jiu-jitsu before starting his MMA training with Duke Roufus at Roufusport MMA. He also entered UFC with a massive name after his highly-publicized WWE exit.
Punk fought twice in the UFC, losing by submission to Mickey Gall in September 2016, and then losing by unanimous decision to Mike Jackson. The loss to Jackson was later overturned to a no contest after Jackson failed a drug test for marijuana. We will have to see if CM Punk ever re-visits his UFC career. After all, Endeavor merged UFC and WWE under one TKO banner, so that is always possible in some respect.
CM Punk will wrestle his first televised singles match for WWE in a decade at SummerSlam. He will take on Drew McIntyre in a match where Seth Rollins had declared that there is only one rule.
