Earlier this year, MJF embraced his heel persona and has since been unstoppable, culminating in his recent win of the AEW American Championship. His mic game remains on point and it appears MJF has been dubbed as AEW’s version of The Rock.
In the five years since AEW was founded, the company has seen both significant achievements and challenges. While its success is largely attributed to its talented roster, it has yet to cultivate mainstream stars on the level of WWE legend The Rock.
While speaking on the Reffin’ it Up podcast, former WWE personality Jonathan Coachman described MJF as AEW’s equivalent to The Rock. Despite this praise, Coachman expressed concern that AEW lacks other stars who can match MJF’s presence, particularly on the microphone.
Coachman noted that having no other wrestler who can rival MJF’s charisma might lead to situations where he seems like the only standout, and this could potentially make the rest of the roster appear less impressive or like they’re merely using lines for crowd reactions.
“To me, MJF, I was shocked, and from what I understand, I heard the number that he’s making now with his new deal, and none of us ever know. But he’s the one dude to me that moves the needle a little bit. But when you have a guy like him who’s as close to The Rock as they have, but you have nobody else that can match him on the mic — do you guys feel this way? That if you don’t have a guy that can match you, sometimes you come off as a bully or just using lines that can get a pop from the crowd?”
As for The Rock himself, he is expected to wrestle another match in 2024 before WrestleMania 41 as well. Nevertheless, MJF being compared to The Rock is a big deal and that’s all that matters.
