WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg remains a free agent after his WWE contract expired and that gave rise to speculation he would join AEW. While it never happened in the end, Goldberg admitted that am over to AEW was considered solely for Sting’s retirement.

In the AEW Revolution pay-per-view’s main event, Sting and Darby Allin defended their AEW World Tag Team Titles against The Young Bucks. The match included various callbacks and emotional moments, providing a memorable experience for the attending fans. Sting and Darby Allin would successfully retain their titles in the end, bringing an end to Sting’s incredible career.

Goldberg previously revealed having engaged in discussions with AEW President Tony Khan on multiple occasions. However, Goldberg ultimately felt AEW was far ”too cheesy’ for his liking.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Goldberg was asked if he and AEW were ever close to making a deal. Goldberg noted that they were not but admitted that during Sting’s retirement run there was a chance and he only considered going to AEW for that reason.

Goldberg explained that he and Khan had differing perspectives, which may have influenced the outcome. Goldberg also mentioned reaching out to Sting with the hope of participating in Sting’s farewell tour. While he would have liked to be involved, Goldberg emphasized that the focus should remain on Sting and not overshadow his farewell. He acknowledged that the timing wasn’t right for such an involvement, and he didn’t want to complicate things further.

“No, I don’t think I was ever close to making a deal with him. I think it was much more a realistic transition when Sting was involved. I reached out to Sting because I wanted to be a part [of it], I thought he and I could do a farewell thing at some point together. But it wasn’t about me, it was about Sting and I could never overshadow anything that he does. But I don’t want to convolute the waters. It would have been a nice crescendo but it wasn’t about me. So the timing was kind of off.”

Goldberg also admitted he has no idea who his retirement opponent should be. Regardless, we will have to wait and see what will become of Goldberg, as a stint in AEW is out of the realm of possibility right now, but he is still happy with how Sting’s retirement was handled in the end.
