WWE signed new television deals several months ago, leading to anticipation about their next moves. RAW is moving to Netflix, where the show will be commercial-free and uncensored. WWE NXT is going to The CW as part of the new deal. However, the USA Network is not losing all its pro wrestling content. They will be getting SmackDown on Friday nights, and WWE has already started their promotional campaign.
WWE SmackDown will move to the USA Network in October 2024. This change is part of a five-year, $1.4 billion deal, which will also include four primetime annual specials on NBC. While the exact day WWE SmackDown will air weekly with the network change isn’t official, there is a reported direction.
NBC Universal has started airing commercials to hype fans for their September SmackDown premiere. This will see SmackDown leave FOX, but they will still be in good hands.
WWE will actually move to their new SmackDown home before the original October date, as their first episode back on the channel will air on September 13. The network plans to draw significant attention to this. With NBCU’s reach during the Olympics, this could provide a lot of exposure.
We will have to see what is next for WWE’s creative direction, but the USA Network knows how to host a pro wrestling show. The network and WWE have a partnership that dates back decades, and SmackDown was also once on the channel. This move may lose some viewers, simply due to Fox’s reach, but the SmackDown brand won’t lose any steam.
