CM Punk’s return to WWE was a huge event that shook up the company’s storylines and added a lot of excitement about its future. However, he has been sidelined for a long time due to a triceps injury he suffered at the Royal Rumble, and he hasn’t competed in a match since. In light of his injury hiatus, we now have confirmation on whether WWE will add additional time to his contract because of his injury.

It was recently reported that CM Punk and WWE are currently in negotiations for a new contract and that it was WWE who initiated the proceedings. The motivation for renegotiating the contract, despite having an existing one, comes from the changing dynamics of the business. This includes factors like big numbers, merchandise sales, and social media impact, which were discussed during the negotiations.

While speaking on Fightful Select’s Backstage Report, Sean Ross Sapp was asked whether WWE tacked on additional time to CM Punk’s contract due to his in-ring hiatus as a result of his injury.

Sean Ross Sapp noted that sources close to CM Punk have emphasized that he hasn’t ceased working, despite not being actively involved in wrestling. Punk has continued to appear on screen and contribute as an on-screen talent in various roles, including storylines, commentary, and hosting events. He has maintained his involvement with WWE and provided value through these different avenues.

“It was stressed to me by people close to CM Punk, that he hasn’t stopped working. He hasn’t wrestled but he has still been on screen and working as an on-screen talent. Whether it be in the storyline, in commentary, hosting things – any number of deals. He’s still been working through his WWE deal and have been able to give them some value.”

We have also reported about WWE’s feelings towards CM Punk during his current contract negotiations, as it is clearly positive. WWE is clearly very high on the Second City Saint and he is set for a huge match against Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam, so we’ll have to see how that match turns out.
