AEW has been awarded a significant tax credit from the state of Ohio, potentially paving the way for the promotion to establish a stronger presence in the Buckeye State.
This week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced over $35 million in state tax credits for various film, television, and Broadway projects. Among the 17 entities benefiting from these credits, AEW is the only wrestling promotion included, receiving a substantial $1.275 million in tax credit.
In a statement, Governor DeWine expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunities this initiative brings to Ohio:
“Ohio is an ideal location for entertainment production; we offer big city backdrops, small-town appeal, and everything in between. We’re happy to welcome these productions – and the economic impact they’ll bring – to Ohio.”
This development for AEW comes at an intriguing time, coinciding with WWE’s upcoming SummerSlam event in Cleveland. WWE also benefited from Ohio’s support, receiving $1.68 million in tax credits through the state’s Motion Picture Tax Credit program, underscoring the state’s commitment to attracting major entertainment events.
AEW has already established a connection with Ohio, having held its 17th episode of Dynamite in Cleveland in January 2020, and later returning for the 13th episode of Collision in September 2023. Several prominent AEW talents hail from Ohio, including former World Champion Jon Moxley, former TNT Champion Wardlow, and Shane Taylor, who is currently sidelined with an injury.
The substantial tax credit awarded to AEW suggests that Ohio could become a key location for future AEW events. This move not only highlights Ohio’s appeal as a destination for entertainment productions but also signals potential growth and expansion for AEW in the region.
