Rey Mysterio is a revered veteran in the professional wrestling world, known for his undeniable influence on the industry. His theme song is also one of the most iconic in WWE history but it appears the band
Dating back to the early 2000s, Rey Mysterio’s entrance theme in WWE, “Booyaka 619,” was created by the band P.O.D and there are countless memories associated with the song as well.
Sonny Sandoval, the lead vocalist and co-founder of P.O.D., recently appeared on Drinks With Johnny and talked about the band’s experience with WWE regarding their music. Sandoval revealed that while WWE has requested to use their music, the band often did not receive financial compensation.
Instead, WWE offered publicity as a substitute for payment. Sandoval mentioned that even when their song was featured at major events like WrestleMania 40, P.O.D. did not see any financial gain from it.
Sanvodal explained that WWE, being such a massive and influential entity, would often ask to use music without offering payment, promising significant exposure instead. Sandoval noted that although P.O.D.’s song continues to be played during Rey Mysterio’s entrances, the band has not benefited financially from its use. He described the situation as a “game,” reflecting the complex nature of their dealings with WWE.
”Sometimes, we’ve done stuff with WWE and because WWE is so huge, they’re so powerful of an empire, even back then. But they can say, ‘Can we use your music?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Okay. We’re not gonna pay you for it. But because we’re WWE, you’re gonna get so much press’ and you know what I mean? ‘And get so much hype’ and at some point, you’re like, ‘Dang, okay.’ I guess so. Because even now, I still hear it when Rey comes out. Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania… You’re like, ‘Dude, they’re still playing our jam.’ Big shout out to Mad One. It’s like, they’re still playing our tune but we ain’t seeing none of that… It’s a game bro. It’s a game.”
As for Rey Mysterio himself, he underwent stem cell therapy and competed in his first World Title match in a year this week. Nonetheless, some fans might be surprised by this revelation given by Sonny Sandoval, but the WWE name certainly has a lot of brand value and that also matters in the end.
