CM Punk was injured during his first match back with WWE at the 2024 Royal Rumble event. That was a terrible incident that took him out of a WrestleMania program with Seth Rollins, but things never cooled down between the Second City Saint and Drew McIntyre.
The feud between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre will see the two finally collide in a match set for SummerSlam on August 3. Although Punk’s triceps injury at the Royal Rumble halted Punk’s momentum a bit, he has since interfered with McIntyre’s chances at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, leading to their eventual confrontation in Cleveland.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Nic Nemeth expressed his admiration for the feud, highlighting how Punk’s injury added depth to the storyline. As TNA World Champion, Nemeth’s words have a bit more weight to them after clinching the title at Slammiversary.
“Punk getting injured is the best thing to happen to this story times a million. It’s not the old days, but it would have been like…they would have had three matches, and it would have been each of them getting a win, and then maybe they might do a cage or something, and it’s like, ‘Okay, we got it.’ Instead, you don’t get the match, it’s almost like it’s the ’80s again when there’s four pay-per-views a year, and you’ve got to wait six or seven months to get to see this pay off.”
This prolonged buildup has only heightened the excitement and anticipation for their match at SummerSlam. It will be very interesting to see how WWE books that match, especially since Seth Rollins is going to be on hand as the special guest referee.
Ringside News will have continued coverage of the build toward SummerSlam. You never know what can happen on a daily basis at this point, especially with Punk and McIntyre still taking shots at each other on social media. Drew McIntyre recently posed with Jack Perry for a photo, one that nobody saw coming, but then the Scottish Warrior deleted the photo later on.
CM Punk’s return to WWE hasn’t seen him lock up in a singles match on television yet. He did have two matches with Dominik Mysterio at WWE live events prior to the Royal Rumble, but now fans are going to have to wait until August 3 to see him in the ring once again. WWE RAW GM Adam Pearce already made a declaration that the two men cannot touch each other until SummerSlam, but the good news is that they don’t have to wait much longer.
