Since its debut in 2019, AEW has established itself as a significant competitor to WWE’s longstanding dominance in the U.S. pro wrestling industry. The comparison to WCW is frequently made by fans and industry insiders alike. Recently, Mercedes Mone made headlines by claiming that AEW Dynamite would surpass WCW and now Eric Bischoff has responded to these comments.
Despite consistently delivering high-quality matches and engaging storylines on its three weekly shows, AEW has faced scrutiny over recent declines in viewership and live attendance. This has sparked speculation about a potential downturn for the company, drawing comparisons to the trajectory of WCW.
The July 17 episode of AEW Dynamite marked the milestone of the 250th edition of the show, featuring a night filled with memorable moments and remarkable matches that resonated with fans.
The CEO celebrated this significant achievement, emphasizing the show’s impressive trajectory. She noted that AEW Dynamite is on pace to surpass WCW’s flagship program, Monday Nitro, which aired a total of 288 episodes.
“I was looking forward to Dynamite 250. This is a really big milestone for AEW as we are so close to surpassing WCW records in terms of being around when a lot of people said that we weren’t going to survive.”
Eric Bischoff addressed Mone’s comments on 83 Weeks, dismissing the comparison as immature. Bischoff remarked that fans who are excited about “Dynamite” potentially outlasting “Nitro” are akin to young children just learning to communicate.
“Who gives a s**t, right?” Bischoff said. “A lot of AEW fans are like, ‘I can’t believe ‘Dynamite’ is gonna be around longer than ‘Nitro.” It’s like a little kid, when you’re around a four-year-old or a five-year-old, and they’re just beginning to learn how to really communicate. … As earnest as they are and as passionate as they are, they’re just babbling.”
We have also reported the significance of the ratings for the July 17th edition of AEW Dynamite on AEW and Warner Brothers Discovery’s media rights deal negotiations. Nonetheless, AEW will continue to carry on with its business and that’s all that matters.
