Joe Hendry had a ton of momentum going into TNA Slammiversary, as many fans wanted him to become the TNA World Champion. That didn’t happen as he lost the match and fans claimed he was buried. In response to these claims, Nic Nemeth has now shared his thoughts on the matter.
At TNA Wrestling’s Slammiversary pay-per-view, Moose defended the TNA World Championship against Josh Alexander, Steve Maclin, Nic Nemeth, Frankie Kazarian, and Joe Hendry. With so many challengers, it was anyone’s guess who would win.
During the match, Joe Hendry used a Standing Ovation move to eliminate Moose, setting the stage for a new champion. The crowd cheered loudly with chants of “We Believe.” However, Josh Alexander then delivered a low blow to Hendry followed by a C4, eliminating Hendry from the match. This action drew significant backlash from the audience, who responded with chants of “Bullsh*t.”
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Nic Nemeth talked about the fans’ response to Joe Hendry’s loss in the match. He mentioned that Hendry had the potential to shine, and behind the scenes, efforts were made to ensure he was portrayed positively. Nemeth speculated that the decision might have been aimed at creating a shock factor and boosting views on YouTube, although he was uncertain if that was the exact intention.
“I think it could have been his night. With that comes certain things behind the scenes and all over the company that we would make sure that he was seen in the best possible light. For the most part, I feel that would be more of a shock factor and get a few more views on YouTube at the moment. I don’t know that’s the exact play. Maybe it was.
In this case, someone that takes out the three-year undefeated Moose, has one of the best showings of all six fighters in the match, comes out with people dressed as him in the crowd. Has it been like this for six months or a year? It’s been a few months. It could be the right time, sure. But it also could be the right time to have him in there with Josh Alexander or myself getting that much better, that much more compared, not just on the microphone or an awesome wrestler, but to be ready to be the absolute best top of the top.”
Nemeth also praised Hendry, describing him as a special talent and expressing appreciation for the fan excitement surrounding him. Nemeth shared that the feedback he received included congratulations and positive comments, countering any claims that Hendry had been “buried.” He pointed out that the match set up several storylines and noted that Hendry is positioned to contend for the world title in the future.
“We could have went that way,” Nic Nemeth said. “There is something special about him and I love that so many fans are excited for him and even on the plane. I got to check a few things. I a lot of ‘congratulations’ and ‘awesome match.’ A lot of people going, ‘Joe Hendry got buried.’ The least thing you could ever say about anyone in that match was someone got buried. What an amazing moment. We set up a bunch of stories for a bunch of people. Joe Hendry is coming for the world title. Maybe he’s the rightful champ.
So many great things happened and Joe really got featured in a very positive way where we’re going with this guy long-term. Just in case he happens to be at NXT more and doing other things, we need somebody full-time at the top of the TNA list. I want to be that guy and I’m happy to be that guy.”
Josh Alexander also taunted Joe Hendry after the heel turn, making it clear their feud is far from over. As for Hendry, he will be present next week as part of Week 1 of NXT’s special event The Great American Bash, so he’ll be more focused on that than Josh Alexander for the time being. Regardless, we’ll have to see when Hendry will become the TNA World Champion somewhere down the line.
