The Young Bucks remain one of the mainstays of AEW television and they are never afraid of putting their bodies on the line for the entertainment of fans. They pushed the envelope last year at Double or Nothing with an exploding superkick and Matthew Jackson believes that spot is very underappreciated.

The main event of AEW Double or Nothing 2023 saw the Blackpool Combat Club (Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta) facing off against The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, and “Hangman” Adam Page) in an Anarchy in the Arena match.

Among the many risky moves and dramatic moments in the bout, one standout sequence was Matt Jackson delivering an exploding superkick to Jon Moxley, which definitely shocked fans in a big way.

While speaking on the Sneaker History podcast, Matt Jackson explained that this idea was his own and that it was particularly memorable for him. He detailed how, during the event in Las Vegas, he wore special Jordan 1 sneakers with a pyrotechnic device attached. When he superkicked Moxley, the device created a massive fireball, which was both surprising and impressive.

Jackson noted that the preparation involved obtaining a Nevada state firework license and extensive rehearsals to ensure the stunt would work. Despite the risk of failure, the successful execution of the stunt was a highlight for him, though he feels it might be overshadowed by the numerous other exciting moments from that night. He mentioned that fans often send him messages praising the moment, even though it might not be as widely discussed.

“It’s something I came up with, and the fact that it came out as great as it did is when we were in Las Vegas at Double or Nothing 2023, and I had the Across the Spiderverse Jordan 1 sneakers. I blew them up, essentially, in someone’s face. I superkicked Jon Moxley and I had a pyrotechnic attached to the sneaker. It created this giant fireball in his face. It was so shocking. Nobody saw it coming. It was almost this two or three second delay of, ‘Wait, what?’ No one understood what they had just seen. It was really cool because it took a lot of work. I had to get my Nevada state license as a fireworker, I think they call it, I had to go through rehearsal. We had to really make sure this thing was going to work. There is a good chance that it wouldn’t have worked. So the fact that it worked, and worked as well as it did, that’s one that maybe isn’t talked about enough. People send my private messages all the time, ‘I love this moment,’ but I feel it’s kind of forgotten. Maybe because it was among such a crazy match that night where a million other things. That was a really special moment with sneakers.”

Matt Jackson is now preparing for the Blood and Guts match on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, as The Elite will square off against Team AEW in the match, so we’ll have to see if any exploding shenanigans will take place in the match.
