Cody Rhodes is the prime example of going from an afterthought to rising above as one of the top megastars of the wrestling world. The American Nightmare achieved the pinnacle with his triumph over Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and became the new Undisputed WWE Champion.
But in all fairness, Rhodes’ journey to the top of the biggest mountain went through his tenure in the outside world, with his time in AEW as a significant chapter. Cody Rhodes was one of the founders of the wrestling promotion and served as both EVP and on-screen performer.
However, in a surprising reveal on the Insight podcast with Chris Van Vliet, Cody Rhodes stated that he knew that AEW run was a season that would not last forever, believing that he was meant to do something greater. But even after two years of his departure, Rhodes still holds the promotion close to his heart.
“I just remember (AEW) lovingly, and I also knew I was leaving. I knew it was a season. I knew this wasn’t going to last and I knew there was something greater for me out there. And I know that might sound negative to people, but it’s not. That’s the biggest prize in the wrestling game.”
Rhodes returned to WWE in 2022 and achieved the pinnacle of sports entertainment this year at WrestleMania 40 after a turbulent road of hardships and obstacles. Moving forward, Cody Rhodes will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Solo Sikoa at WWE’s upcoming PLE, SummerSlam.
