John Cena announced his impending retirement from professional wrestling at the 2024 WWE Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Canada.
During his promo, Cena revealed plans to be present when Raw moves to Netflix and stated that the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 2025 will mark his final appearances. He aims to remain active, wrestling in 30 to 40 matches throughout the year.
Reports have stated that various potential opponents for Cena are being discussed, though nothing has been confirmed yet, and he has been actively involved in these discussions.
Amidst the discussion, RAW superstar and former John Cena rival, The Miz, has thrown his name in the hat to battle the 16-time WWE Champion on his retirement tour. During an interview with CBSSports.com, while Miz expressed his desire to face Cena, he also mentioned that he would like the new talent to have a match against The Face That Runs The Place on the last leg of his career.
“I am putting my name in the hat! I’ve been in the ring a lot with John Cena and selfishly I’d want more because that’s how much fun it is getting into the ring with John Cena. But I also want our new talent to experience John Cena. Because as much as I was taught by John and I can teach what John taught me, it’s always better when you have that guy there to teach you. I would want our younger talent to feel that energy.”
Furthermore, he credited John Cena for guiding his life inside and outside the ring, even remiscenting a story regarding their infamous WrestleMania 27 main event showdown.
“I don’t think anyone understands how much John Cena has taught me in a WWE ring. Not only inside but outside the ring as well. He’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world… He’s in everything. That shows when Cena sets his mind on something, he goes full force and wants to do it all. I’m main eventing WrestleMania with John Cena and watching his entrance and looking over and seeing my best friends from high school who were in my living room watching The Rock and [Steve] Austin fight for the title I’m holding. I’m watching John Cena run into the ring and I’m looking at my boys going, ‘We did it.’”
With Cena ready to hang up his boots in the ring next year, it will be interesting to see if WWE decides to book a bout between John Cena and The Miz.
