At the 2024 WWE Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Canada, 16-time WWE Champion John Cena announced his impending retirement from professional wrestling, with discussions underway for potential opponents for his final matches.
During his promo, Cena revealed that he plans to be present when Raw moves to Netflix and stated that the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 2025 will mark his final appearances.
Given his accomplishments and impact on the industry, many regard The Cenation Leader as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, worthy of a spot on the iconic Mount Rushmore of wrestling.
In a related discussion on Maggie & Perloff, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan was asked if he considered Cena for his Mount Rushmore of wrestling. Khan stated that Cena would be a choice for everyone and is credited as one of the greatest wrestling stars of the modern era.
“He would definitely be someone anyone would have to consider, especially in the modern era. For me, a lot of the people on my Mount Rushmore are those I grew up watching and later had the chance to work with. Sting, for instance, is up there for me. My Mount Rushmore includes legends like Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat, Bret Hart, and Steve Austin. Ric Flair is another strong candidate. John Cena is certainly one of the best wrestlers and one of the greatest of this modern era, without a doubt.”
Despite being part of rival promotions, Tony Khan genuinely appreciated The Face That Runs The Place. Elsewhere, Cena’s retirement tour is set to kick off at the beginning of 2025, with various WWE superstars throwing their names in the hat to fight him in the ring before he hangs up his boots for good.
